The January 2023 FOCM | GLSA Networking Event

Cold Chain Logistics in Clinical Trials | January 2023 GLSA Networking Event

Cold chain logistics in clinical trials was the focus of the January 18, 2023 FOCM | GLSA Networking Event. To begin, attendees were welcomed and wished a Happy New Year as the group gathered for the first event of the year. At the same time, GLSA shared how these sessions are structured to encourage open dialogue, flexibility, and meaningful industry connections.

Cold Chain Logistics in Clinical Trials: Event Format and Guidelines

As a reminder, GLSA networking events are designed as open-house sessions. In practice, this means attendees are welcome to drop in when they can and leave when needed. Additionally, presenters typically begin once a strong group has assembled, usually 10–15 minutes after the scheduled start time. Importantly, presentations are not sales pitches but instead focus on specific aspects of clinical trials and where services fit within the development process.

To stay informed, attendees were encouraged to sign up for the GLSA newsletter and notifications about future live and virtual events:

Finally, to support ongoing collaboration, everyone was asked to share their LinkedIn profile in the chat to make follow-up and networking easier.

Industry Updates Impacting Cold Chain Logistics in Clinical Trials

Before transitioning to the main topic, the group shared recent industry updates, news, and informal discussion points. From there, the conversation shifted to the evening’s featured topic: cold chain logistics in clinical trials.

Loretta Cipkus Dubray opened the presentation with an overview of cold chain shipment management. Specifically, she outlined key temperature categories—ambient, refrigerated, frozen, and sub-zero—and reviewed regulatory expectations for managing temperature excursions. In addition, real-world examples highlighted the financial and product losses that can occur when temperature control fails.

Cold Chain Solutions in Practice

Building on this foundation, Rafa Martin-Alos and Victor Camacho explained how CoolChain’s products support temperature control across all categories. Notably, their shipping solutions can maintain required temperatures for up to 120 hours. As a result, refrigerated truck containers are not always necessary, and products with different temperature requirements can be shipped together safely

Closing and Key Takeaway

Overall, the discussion reinforced why cold chain logistics in clinical trials is essential for protecting biologic materials, ensuring regulatory compliance, and safeguarding patient outcomes. Ultimately, events like this highlight the value of shared expertise and practical solutions within the clinical research community.
