The December 2023 FOCM | GLSA Networking Event

December 13, 2023 Year-End Networking Event Recap

The December 13, 2023 GLSA year-end networking event closed out the year on a fun and relaxed note. To set the tone, attendees were encouraged to wear holiday hats. As a result, several festive and creative hats made an appearance throughout the evening. In addition, the group took a moment to wish Taylor Swift a happy birthday, adding to the celebratory spirit.

Connecting the Community

As always, the primary focus of the event was connection. To support this goal, attendees were invited to share their LinkedIn profiles in the chat. This approach makes it easier to continue conversations and follow up after the event.

At the same time, participants were reminded to join the GLSA mailing list to stay informed about upcoming live and virtual events.

Industry Updates and Conference Highlights

To begin the program, the group shared industry updates, news, and informal discussion. Notably, ASH, held earlier that week in San Diego, was highlighted as well attended and energetic. Because ASH is typically the final major therapeutic conference of the year, it served as a fitting conclusion to the 2023 conference season.

Trivia, Games, and Friendly Competition

After the industry discussion, the event shifted to a lighter format with Jeopardy-style trivia games. These games featured categories such as industry abbreviations, facts, and consolidation. For example, participants were asked questions like:

  • What does RBQM stand for?

  • Which company acquired Paidion?

  • In what year was the FDA established?

Meanwhile, Denise McNerney kept track of answers and scores throughout the game. Ultimately, Violet Votin earned the gold medal, while Lauren Sherwood secured the silver.

Looking Ahead

Finally, attendees received a preview of the next event. In January, Don Tinker of Hobson Associates will present on the impact of COVID on the life sciences job market. Additionally, he will discuss current recruitment trends and what professionals can expect moving forward.
