May 15, 2024 Networking Event Recap
The May FOCM and GLSA Networking Event featured an engaging presentation from Boreas Monitoring on their innovative approach to protecting biologic material stored in liquid nitrogen. Fifteen professionals attended the session, which focused on technology, industry trends, and peer connection.
Industry Outlook and Conference Reflections
The event opened with discussion about recent conference attendance. Many attendees noted that first-quarter events exceeded expectations and created strong momentum. In contrast, second-quarter conferences felt flatter and more routine.
Participants agreed that global uncertainty continues to slow spending and delay new projects. Several contributing factors were discussed, including geopolitical conflicts, inflation, interest rates, the U.S. presidential election, and recession concerns.
Featured Presentation: Cryotank Management Innovation
The presentation, “Proactive vs. Reactive Cryotank Management,” was delivered by Will Baird, co-founder of Boreas Monitoring. Boreas is a Wilmington, NC-based company founded by lab professionals with more than 80 years of combined experience operating fertility laboratories.
While managing cryotanks, the founders identified major limitations in traditional temperature-based monitoring systems. Their work accelerated after high-profile tank failures in 2018 caused catastrophic sample loss and significant litigation.
As a result, Boreas developed and patented the CryoScout system. This weight-based monitoring solution can detect cryotank failures up to 84 hours earlier than temperature-based methods. The system gives laboratories critical time to respond and protect stored samples.
Networking and Community
As with all GLSA and FOCM events, the session followed an open-house format. Attendees were encouraged to drop in as schedules allowed. Everyone was also invited to share LinkedIn profiles in the chat to support future follow-up and collaboration.
